Which Chinese Bank Is Easiest for Foreigners to Use? My Personal Experience

    Updated: May 11, 2026

    Why This Matters

If you are a foreigner living in China, choosing the right bank can make a big difference in daily life.

In my experience, the real difference between Chinese banks is whether the overall process feels designed around customers or around the bank's internal procedures.

This becomes especially obvious when you need to solve actual problems, like increasing transfer limits, verifying your identity, or dealing with account restrictions.

For foreigners who may already face language barriers, a smoother and more customer-oriented process matters a lot.

Based on my own experience using several Chinese banks, China Merchants Bank (招商银行) gave me the best overall experience. China Minsheng Bank (民生银行) was somewhere in the middle. Bank of China (中国银行) felt the strictest and the most difficult to deal with.

    My Overall Ranking

    RankBankExperience
1China Merchants Bank (招商银行)Smooth process, higher default limits, and best overall experience.
2China Minsheng Bank (民生银行)Usable, but not as polished.
3Bank of China (中国银行)Very low limits and complicated procedures.

    1. Bank of China (中国银行): Most Complicated Experience

Bank of China gave me the most difficult experience overall.

The initial transfer limit was only around 3,000 RMB, which felt extremely low for normal daily use. Increasing the limit was also much more complicated than I expected. I could not complete the process fully inside the app and had to visit a physical branch in person.

    Bank paperwork and documents

The offline process felt overly complicated:

    • multiple QR codes to scan
    • online forms to complete
    • document uploads
    • additional verification steps
    • finally speaking with staff at the counter

Even after completing several digital steps, the process still required manual handling at the branch.

To be fair, some people may prefer stricter security procedures. But from a convenience and user-experience perspective, it felt much heavier and less efficient.

For foreigners who may already face language barriers, complicated offline procedures can become especially frustrating.

    2. China Merchants Bank (招商银行): Best Overall Experience

If I had to recommend one bank to most foreigners in China, it would be China Merchants Bank.

More importantly, when you actually need to solve a problem, the process feels designed around real users instead of internal banking procedures.

When I needed to handle transfer-limit related issues, the experience was straightforward and relatively smooth. The customer service also felt noticeably friendlier and more customer-oriented.

One thing I immediately noticed was that the default transfer limit was already significantly higher than Bank of China, which made normal usage much easier from the beginning.

For foreigners dealing with language barriers, the overall usability and customer-service experience make a huge difference in everyday life.

For me, 招商银行 gave the most comfortable overall experience.

    3. China Minsheng Bank (民生银行): Somewhere in the Middle

China Minsheng Bank felt acceptable overall.

It was not nearly as frustrating as Bank of China, but it also did not feel as smooth or polished as China Merchants Bank.

The app and services were generally usable, and I did not encounter major problems. However, the overall experience still felt a bit less refined, especially when handling more complicated banking tasks.

If you already have a 民生银行 account, it is probably fine to continue using it. But if I were opening a brand-new account today, I would still personally choose 招商银行 first.

    Final Thoughts

In my opinion, situations like transfer-limit handling reveal the real operational style of a bank much more clearly than basic daily usage.

    Based on my personal experience:

    • China Merchants Bank (招商银行) offered the smoothest and most customer-oriented experience.
    • China Minsheng Bank (民生银行) was decent but average.
    • Bank of China (中国银行) felt the most restrictive and procedure-heavy.

Of course, experiences may vary depending on the city or branch, but this was my real experience using these banks in China.
